Creating Custom Coordinate Systems and Localization in Emlid Flow

This article will show you how to create custom coordinate systems in Emlid Flow and Emlid Flow 360 when you know the parameters of the system you would like to use. This will also show you how to use the localization feature and create a custom CRS from that localization if you have an Emlid +Survey subscription. Use Emlid Flow to manage your projects with the Emlid Reach RS3 and Emlid Reach RS2+.

We will first create a custom coordinate system in Emlid Flow and Emlid Flow 360 using known parameters, then using localization. In Flow 360 you can create your CRS in the menu under your profile or similar to Emlid Flow you can create it when selecting a coordinate system while creating a New projectFor this example, we’ll be using the parameters provided by Ohio’s Department of Transportation for their new low distortion county system that isn’t yet featured in Emlid Flow. For this example, we will create the system for Summit county since that is where we are located. This process will look similar in Emlid Flow.

Using the localization feature in Emlid Flow also allows us to create a custom coordinate system. To apply the localization, we will need a few control points created in our local coordinate system that we can find and collect with our Emlid Reach receiver. We will then pair the control points with the points collected with our receiver. Emlid’s recommendation based on their testing is to use 3 or more points. Your RMSE will not vary significantly the more points you add after that. Once we have our control paired up, we can look at the calculated parameters before we apply the localization. Once we apply the localization we are then given the option to save it as a new coordinate system.

Manage your projects in Emlid Flow and import your code libraries with the +Survey subscription. Exercise full control over your Emlid Reach RS3 and RS2+ receivers with Emlid Flow.
