Operating the DJI D-RTK 3 as a Network Rover: A Step-by-Step Guide

In drone mapping, accuracy is everything. Whether you are generating highly precise topographic maps or executing critical infrastructure inspections, ground control points (GCPs) and ground checks are the anchor of your data's spatial integrity.

While the DJI D-RTK 3 is highly capable as a traditional local base station, configuring it as a Network Rover unlocks an incredibly streamlined workflow for collecting ground truth data using an NTRIP network.

This guide breaks down exactly how to activate, configure, and operate your DJI D-RTK 3 as a network rover, as well as how to export your final data ready for processing.

Required Equipment & Downloads

Before heading into the field, ensure you have the necessary software installed:

  • DJI Assistant 2 (Enterprise Series): Required on a PC for initial activation and firmware updates.
  • DJI Enterprise App: Currently compatible with Android 10 and newer devices only.

💡 Versatility Note: Beyond functioning as a network rover, the D-RTK 3 can also act as a local base for the Matrice 350/300 RTK, or in a "Relay Mode" utilizing O4 Enterprise transmission to extend a Matrice 4's range up to 25 km.

Step 1: Initial Setup and Activation

Before you can use the D-RTK 3 for the first time, it must be registered to your DJI account.

  • Download and install the latest version of DJI Assistant 2 on your PC.
  • Launch the software and sign in with your DJI credentials.
  • Power on the D-RTK 3, plug it into your PC via a USB-C cable, and follow the on-screen prompts to activate the unit.
  • While connected, check for any available firmware updates and apply them to ensure optimal performance and satellite tracking.

Step 2: Powering On and Selecting Operating Mode

The D-RTK 3 uses an intuitive button-press sequence to prevent accidental setting changes in the field.

  • Powering On: Give the power button a short press, followed immediately by a long press.
  • Switching to Rover Mode: Triple-press the button to cycle through the available modes. Watch the M LED indicator light to confirm your mode:
    • 🟢 Green: Base Station Mode
    • 🔵 Blue: Rover Mode (Select this one)
    • 🟡 Yellow: Relay Mode

Step 3: Connecting and Entering NTRIP Credentials

With the unit in Rover Mode (Blue LED), open the DJI Enterprise App on your Android device.

  • Tap the Rover Station option located in the top-right corner of the app screen.
  • Select Connect Device and pair with your D-RTK 3 via Bluetooth.
  • Once connected, tap on the device profile to input your NTRIP credentials (IP address, port, mountpoint, username, and password) provided by your local RTK network provider to achieve a localized RTK fix.

Step 4: Saving a Coordinate System

To save time on future mapping jobs, you can build a library of your frequently used coordinate systems.

  • Within the app, tap Manage Coordinate System, then tap Create.
  • You can either construct a completely custom coordinate system or select a known, established system.
  • Name it descriptively so it is easy to identify later—for example, NAD83(2011) Ohio North.
  • Save the system. It will now be available as a quick-select option whenever you start a new data collection task.

Step 5: Collecting GCPs and Check Shots

Once you have an active RTK fix and your coordinate system is applied, you are ready to collect ground data.

  • Create a new task, give it a name, and verify your coordinate format.
  • Mount the D-RTK 3 securely onto a survey rod and place it directly over your physical target point. Level the bubble vial on your rod perfectly.
  • Open the point settings menu in the app and double-check that your pole height is accurately entered (measuring from the ground point to the base of the receiver).
  • Select your point type:
    • Control Point (GCP): Used to anchor the imagery in your photogrammetry software. You can set the number of times you want the receiver to automatically restart and re-average the collection for maximum accuracy.
    • Check Shot: Used independently after processing to verify the ultimate accuracy of your map.
  • Tap Add Point to record the coordinates. Repeat this sequence for all targets across your site. When finished, tap Complete in the top-right corner.

Step 6: Exporting Your Data for Processing

Once your fieldwork is wrapped up, getting the data off the device and into your photogrammetry suite takes just a few taps.

  • Locate your completed task in the project list and tap the three-dot menu icon.
  • Select View Task Report, then tap Export.
  • The app will generate both a JSON file and a standard CSV file.

These files are perfectly formatted and ready to import directly into DJI Terra or your preferred photogrammetry software to tightly tie down your drone mapping models.
